Hip Disk - Is it Hip?

File this one under "what was she thinking?". Straight from the Australian National University's wearable technology lab, Danielle Wilde has come up with one of the wackiest musical instruments we've yet seen at sonikmatter.com, and we've seen a few.

If you were selling this as a synth, it would be a monophonic synth, with one patch, and a 12 note range, and no MIDI, though on the plus side, you can play it simply by wiggling your hips. There are plans to make 2 more of these prototypes, so that Danielle and a couple of her mates can play chords, though the staff here at Sonikmatter would much rather see these things get used to do 16th note psy-trance bass lines at 140bpm.

Anyway, at the very least, doing a gig wearing one of these things, will ensure that the crowd remembers you, and we shouldn't be too critical of such things. Wearable technologies is still a field in it's infancy, and the idea of making better controllers for live use, or embedding controllers into clothing or costuming, certainly has merit.
