The powerful voice of Luciano Pavarotti was yesterday silenced, as the opera star passed away in his home town of Modena after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Pavarotti, along with tenors Jose Carreras and Placido Domingo took the world stage in 1990 when they appeared in concert at the Baths of Cracala in Rome at the end of the World Cup soccer. The Three Tenors went on to get nominated for two Grammy awards and became a household name with a 1996 tour earning an estimated $36 Million.

Pavarotti shot to fame in 1963 after standing in for Giuseppe Di Stefano as Rodolfo in a performance of Puccini's La Boheme, in London. The conductor was so impressed that Pavarotti was given a role opposite Dame Joan Sutherland in a US production of Lucia di Lamermoor, and later a tour of Australia.

He is survived b his wife Nicoletta, their four-year-old daughter, Alice, as well as three daughters from Pavarotti's first marriage.
