Logic:Automation Folder

From Sonikmatter

The Automation Folder is an Arrange Window designed for editing Automation as Regions. All Tracks that have Automation will show up in the Automation Folder with Regions containing what looks like MIDI Data so that you can Cut, Copy, Paste, Move Regions without worying about Automation Nodes. The Key Command for opening the Automation Folder was removed in a recent version of Logic leaving Screensets as the only way to get to the Automation Folder.

TIPS: Getting to the Automation Folder

If you don't have an {{ln1

as a Screenset and you don't have access to Logic 6, ask on a forum for someone to save a song with a Screenset to the Automation Folder then you can copy/paste that Screenset to your songs.

Window Organization
When the Automation Folder is first opened there will be a track for every Audio Object and Midi Port/Channel. This can easily end up being hundreds of tracks even though you could have only one track with Automation on it. It is best to set a Key Command for "Delete Unused Tracks." This is a non-destructive Delete meaning it only removes the unused tracks from view, it does not actually Delete the tracks but will only leave the tracks that containing Automation in view.}}

"This is how I do it. Have an arrange window open with track automation shown, an event float and an event editor all linked. opt+double click on an automation node, which will get the even float to see the controller. Click the event shown and that will tell the event window to show the automation. Make a selection of whatever in the event list and cmd+1, open another arrange window and boom__automation folder. Then I saved a screenset. I stumbled on this quite awhile ago, didn't realize it wasn't an option. I actually was just looking to use the event list to do some quantization on automation. Happy accident.

On further thought, why even have the event float? It just happened to be up when I tried it. You can have an event list open, with the pink chain on and opt+double-click the automation node and it will be selected in the event list. Then open a new arrange window from selection in the even list."

OK! Credit to buddhabelly but I couldn't replicate what he was doing. It took me a bit but the whole trick is from the Automation Event Editor as he was stating. You can get to the Automation Folder any time from being at the top layer in the Automation Event Editor. Using the little box next to the "Edit" pull-down in the Editor you make sure you are at the top layer, then opt-click on any of the items in the list. So actually, with a keycommand set to "Open Automation Edit...", "Go Out of Folder or Region", opt-double click on any item in the list. With a MIDI keycommand you could have it do Open Automation Edit on key down and Go Out of Folder on key up. The advatage I see to this over the screenset is that it actually goes to the region or track that you selected. This way you can do an edit quickly rather than having to use the "delete unused tracks" keycommand after opening the window which could have several hundred tracks from all your devices.
