Logic is the chosen sequencer for many because of it's MIDI capabilities. The Environment is virtually a MIDI playground for people that want to modify and enhance their workflow.

MIDI for Logic begins at the Physical Input which can be found in the Click & Ports Layer of the Environment.

All MIDI Input Devices connected to the computer, whether they are external or LAN show up in the Physical Input Object, including Caps Lock Keys. The SUM of the Physical Input represents ALL Data from ALL devices connected to the computer. When Logic is first installed the SUM is the default connection that eventually ends up at the Sequencer Input or "to Recording & Thru" Object. This connection has to exist or data coming from a MIDI Controller will not be recorded into Logic.

A MIDI Controller coming in on any line of the Physical Input will trigger any instrument on a track. In order to trigger an external MIDI Device Logic needs a MIDI Device Instrument somewhere in the Environment. This Instrument does not need any cabling, it just needs to exist and be set to the proper MIDI Port/Channel for that external MIDI Device. There are three MIDI Device Instruments:

When one of these Instruments exist in the Environment then it becomes available from the Arrange Window Tracks, selectable by pressing on the Track Name and navigating the menu. If the Port and Channel of the Instrument are correct, the MIDI Controller is coming in on a Port for the Physical Input, and the connection is made between the Physical Input and Sequencer Input then the external MIDI Device will be triggered.
