Logic:Tutorial- Creating TouchTracks

From Sonikmatter

To find out how Touch Tracks work it is best to start with a simple song that you have already created. Something with a simple drum beat, a bassline, and a couple synth lines would be ideal. I am going to use names for Regions in the Arrange Window that hopefully can be associated with your Regions, you can even rename your Regions as they are here.

These Regions can be different lengths:

  • Kitloop 1a
  • Kitloop 1b
  • Bassloop 1a
  • Bassloop 1b
  • Synthloop 1a
  • Synthloop 1b
  • Synthloop 2a
  • Synthloop 2b

Working with these Regions from the Arrange Window can become cluttered therefore we will use a Folder to keep them organized. The Regions can be in any order from left to right, for instance Kitloop 1a can be to the left of Kitloop 1b because they are not actually played along with the Sequence even though there is a timeline showing. The Touch Tracks Object only plays them when you Trigger them.

  1. Select all of the Regions that are to be used for the Touch Tracks.
  2. From the Arrange Window Pull-down Menu: Region>Folder>Pack Folder

A new Track will appear in the Arrange Window with a new Folder Region named after the first Region that was packed. Double click on the Folder Region to open it.

  1. Open an Environment window.
  2. Navigate to a Layer that you would like to put the Touch Tracks Object in, remembering that this will be the Layer that the Touch Tracks Object will show up in when selecting it from a Track in the Arrange Window.
  3. To create a new Touch Tracks, from the Environment Window Pull-down Menu: New>Touch Tracks

This Window (Touch Tracks Editor Window) pops up upon creation of a Touch Tracks Object.

  1. Close the Environment Window and move the Touch Tracks Editor Window so you can see the Regions in the Folder that you created.
  2. Using the vertical scrollbar in the Touch Tracks Editor Window make sure you can see the C3 to C4 octave.
  3. Using the mouse, grab Kitloop 1a and drop it on C3 in the Touch Tracks Window. This will highlight C3 and show "Kitloop 1a" under "Region/Folder"
  4. Using the mouse, grab Kitloop 1b and drop it on D3 in the Touch Tracks Window.
  5. Using the mouse, grab Bassloop 1a and drop it on E3 in the Touch Tracks Window.
  6. Using the mouse, grab Bassloop 1b and drop it on F3 in the Touch Tracks Window.

  11. In the Touch Tracks Editor Window press down on the vertical line in the "Trigger" column for the Kitloop 1a (C3) and select "ToggleLoop" from the menu that pops up.
  12. Press down on the vertical line in the "Start" column for the Kitloop 1a and select "Next 1/1" (this makes sure that the loop will only begin at the beginning of a measure (bar)).
  13. Repeat the last two steps for the other regions except use different settings for the Trigger and Start so you can see what they do when you start playing.
  14. Select an unused Track or create a new one in the Arrange Window, using the mouse press down on the name of the Track and navigate to the Touch Tracks Object that you created.
  15. Pull out of the Folder Window by double clicking in an open area of the Window (brings you back out to the Arrange Window).
  16. Mute the Folder Track using the Track Mute button (this makes sure that the Regions inside the folder don't start playing when you don't want them to).
  17. Put Logic into Play and start hitting the keys that were assigned to the Touch Tracks (C3 to C4).
