This is the mLAN FAQ

There is also a Logic FAQ and a Kurzweil FAQ

Installation

Question - Why can't I upgrade mLAN on my system? I keep getting an error

Answer - Old mLAN installations must be completely removed prior to installing updates. Try running the uninstall tool, and if that still doesn't work, try the Fukuri Method. Also check Installation.

Windows Sounds

Enabling WDM

Question - Why can't I hear my Windows sounds, or Media Player (or iTunes, or WinAmp, or my games) through my mLAN hardware?

Answer - This is probably because you don't have WDM turned on. Most consumer applications (such as Windows) use the Windows Driver Model sound card drivers. mLAN is designed for integration into professional audio authoring tools and uses the much more powerful ASIO driver model, though mLAN also has some limited WDM support.

To playback windows consumer audio support, you need to select WDM in either the Autoconnector or in the Graphic Patchbay. In the second application, this involves clicking on the icon on the mLAN computer, and turning on WDM support. Two blue ports will appear, that you can connect to other mLAN devices using the audio routing tools.

Update - The latest mLAN drivers (v1.62) now support 8 WDM output channels automatically and these will be mixed with the first 8 ASIO channels. It is no longer necessary to manually enable WDM support for mLAN if you update to this version of the driver.

Recording WDM

Question - Why can't I record sounds through Windows Sound Recorder (or old versions of Soundforge)?

Answer - The latest versions of mLAN drivers, and mLAN Tools doesn't support recording using the WDM support, only playback or 2 channels. The latest version of Soundforge has ASIO support, so you can upgrade your software, and use the ASIO Drivers.

Early versions of the mLAN drivers supported WDM recording, though you will lose many features of the new drivers.

Noise while Pausing

Question - When I hit pause on Media Player (or Winamp, or ITunes), I get a high pitched noise out of my mLAN equipment. How can I stop it?

Answer - This is caused by the hardware accelleration that windows uses with some consumer level cards, particularly with gaming. mLAN is not designed to utilize hardware accelleration, as it is not required for professional audio applications.

To turn this off, check out this link at 01xray.com.

mLAN Networking

Question - Can I connect two mLAN computers together?

Answer - No. Currently mLAN does not support this functionality, and, in fact, the standard 1394 networking should be disabled in Windows if you want to get the best performance from mLAN. Yamaha have indicated that they are working towards mLAN Networking, though no date has been announced for a potential release.

mLAN and Disk Use

Question - How can I use a Firewire HDD with mLAN

Answer - Tim Kiel has a method documented in this thread on 01xray.com

Measuring Latency

Question - How do I measure the latency of my system and use Cubase's Sample Offset Feature?

Answer - Download the Loopback Test and open the notepad file to view the instruction. Once you have measured your latency you can adjust sample offset in the Device Manager (press the Expert button).

Note that some systems show a random offset error as documented in This 01xray.com Thread

Pops and Clicks

Question - I get pops and clicks on my mLAN system. How can I fix this?

Answer - Firstly make sure that you have a firewire card from the recommended list. This can be found here. If you have a card that isn't on this list and you are getting pops and clicks, then you may be wasting your time trying other solutions until you have the correct card.

By all means try your existing card first. There are cards that work fine that aren't on the list, but there are an awful lot of cards that people have had problems with, particularly firewire ports on Soundblaster Cards, on board firewire and combination cards (USB/Firewire).

After this, visit the Installation page and follow the links for step by step guides, and troubleshooting.

Calibration

Question - How do I calibrate mLAN on my PC?

Answer - Check out this link at 01xray.com

MIDI Timing

Question - When I record and play back MIDI with my 01x through mLAN, the MIDI timing seems to be out. What can I do?

Answer - Try the emulated ports fix from cubase.net.

Wordclock

Question - How do I set up my 01x to be the wordclock master?

Answer - Firstly, if you are on a mac then it's not possible (as at V 1.5.4 drivers). The mac must be the wordclock master.

On the PC, you can use Fukuri's Method as posted at this thread.

The clock is pretty stable on the 01x but to use it as the master you have to set it in 3 places so try this first

Here is the fukuri method

Set it up as follows

  • 01x is wordclock master and you have checked it in the following places.
  • 01x, press utility wclck and and enable, page down and set as internal and 44.1 on autoconnector make sure 01x is selected as master before connecting
  • In the graphical patchbay, select the 01x and press the 1 master button on the toolbar.
  • After all that press shift utility/backup to make this your power on default.

Too Many Devices

Question - The graphic patchbay tells me that I can't connect a second device when I try to connect it to the audio inputs of the computer. It gives me a message about too many devices being connected. What can I do?

Answer - It's unclear exactly what causes this problem, but this problem has been known to occur on the PC where one of the mLAN devices is set as the clock master (ie not the computer). To fix this problem set the computer to be the single master, and then try to connect the audio connections that you need. Once you have some audio connections done, you can set the clock back to an external device, and you should not see this problem anymore.

Note that it's not possible to connect an unlimited number of devices directly to the computer via mLAN. The number of connections depends upon the number of ISOC (isynchronous) channels that your firewire card has. To check this, click setup on the computer, in the graphic patchbay, and click information. This window should show a number of tabs accross the top. Each device requires 2 tabs. So, if your card has 4 tabs, then you can connect 2 external devices. If your card has 8 tabs, then you can connect up to 4 devices.

This limitation doesn't affect connections between different external devices, only between a device and the computer.

Resetting Devices

Question - How do I reset my mLAN devices. They don't appear in AC or GP and I need to reset them to the factory default

Answer - For the PC with drivers 1.5.5 simply select reset from the mLAN menu (from the toolbar icon). For the mac, you will need the tool that is available from 01xray.com. Follow the download instructions carefully, ensuring that you change the extension.
